One of Bluestone Edge’s offerings is ‘Deepend Journeys’ for athletes and associated sponsors each year. We believe that the best way to see and understand the power of sport and the importance it can have in positive social change is by standing in someone else’s shoes. These journeys take athletes to witness the impact that sport can have in communities and exchange and learn from those people involved in such projects. These projects are run in close partnership with local partners on the ground in each country, with the backing of sports clubs and governing bodies, commercial sponsors and also with organisations such as Global Reconciliation www.globalreconciliation.org.
Each cohort of athletes and partners who get involved with a Deepend journey will have the opportunity to tell the story of ‘what works’ to Australia on their return, through whichever creative medium they choose (documentary, exhibition, keynote, popular media, or mentoring other athletes or employees for example). In sharing their experience and learning, the group become the messengers and catalyst for change at home.
The ‘United We Stand’ work in Sri Lanka 2010 was the first of these journeys and followed in 2011 with ‘Northern Promise’ in Northern Sri Lanka.
