Positive turn for refugee – The Age Editorial – 25.02.13 [ Other angle ]
FAWAD Ahmed is one of a fortunate few. The leg-spinner claimed refugee status after leaving Pakistan in 2010 on a short-stay visa to play cricket in Australia. He featured in The Age last November while appealing against his rejection by the Refugee Review Tribunal. Within two weeks, the Immigration Minister decided in his favour. On Thursday, Ahmed bowled Victoria to victory against Queensland.
Ahmed has spun his own fairytale with match figures of 7-162 – the best debut by a spinner since 1971-72 – and is seen as a potential Test player. His skills and character won him the support of cricket authorities for his appeal and he was grateful for the opportunity of a new life where he could ”be safe and play cricket”. Just for playing cricket and supporting the education of girls in northern Pakistan, he received death threats from religious extremists for ”promoting a Western culture”. He kept track of old friends online and noticed when one of them had taken seven wickets. The next day Nauman Habib disappeared. His mutilated body was found days later.
Such are the horrors that drive asylum seekers to look to Australia as one of the region’s few Refugee Convention signatories. Like Ahmed, the people we accept are grateful and regional areas, which are desperate for labour, have especially welcomed these willing workers. Yet no more than 14,000 a year have been accepted in the past decade – a figure that has not changed in 30 years, since falling from 22,545 in 1980-81. The refugee and humanitarian intake has fallen relative to total immigration over the past decade, and each decade since the ’70s.
Ahmed’s skills may offer a fast-track route to citizenship, but in every other way his is the typical story of a refugee. ”The last three years was a very hard time,” he said in November. ”I couldn’t sleep at night at times because it was very stressful.” Thousands like him face years in limbo because of political pandering to ignorance and fear.
